Another thing that M might be involved with is a forest management council or advisory committee, in partnership with the local and vastly underfunded forest rangers. He's tried to complain to the District (Districts are like counties) about the logging his trekking guides have seen, to no avail.
Imagine instead if he could help, with his trekkers to be further eyes and ears for the forestry folks here. They hardly have the resources to fill up their trucks, let alone try to patrol 1000s of hectares of forest. His trekkers could help do that. He'd be able to work closely with them to find possible solutions. They would also learn about how the tourism sector of their economy benefits from having an intact forest.
